Wednesday 22nd October
I rented a car which I picked up on arrival. The flight was due in a 05.00 so I had booked for 06.00 since I figured this was opening time. In fact they make themselves available 24 hours a day. There was some confusion about the insurances, but I drove away at 07.00. Next challenge was to drive through Nairobi ! The main drag that everyone has to take is the Mombassa road which leads into Uhuru Highway. The best place to turn off towards Muthaiga is the Museum roundabout, but I continued to Westlands roundabout. I must say that after such a long time since my last visit, everything looked a bit different. However the worst aspect of the trip was excessive and aggressive traffic.
After passing Muthaiga where all the Embassies are located I turned off towards Kiambu. About 15 miles later I was on my uncle’s quiet plot amongst the trees. Wildlife is abundant. Monkeys and a wide range of birds always there to entertain. (Family dogs there to annoy)
The rest of the day was used for ‘catch-up’ talk, and then we went for lunch at the beautiful Muthaiga Club. Here one finds a decent collection of the more luxurious cars in Kenya. They belong to the politicians and more wealthy locals. Their excesses are shocking because most of the population can barely afford a litre of petrol let alone a 70,000 euro Hummer.
Lunch was baked Tilapia and veg, and of course several beers (Tusker Malt).
